Improve Your Reaction Time:

I get lots of emails asking me how to improve your reaction time. I'm not very quick myself, and my best advice is to drink a pot of coffee. So I asked the site's fastest users how they got so quick.

This is what they told me:

Don't concentrate on the text. If you read "click," your brain is taking too much time to read before reacting.
Don't focus too hard in one spot, use more peripheral vision (still looking at the box), and just click when "something" changes.
Alcohol and some medicine hurt your score.
- Argammon

Sit close to the monitor.
Find the spot on your mouse directly above the spring, and press down so you are just on the threshold of clicking.
- Nitro

Minimize distractions.
Stay hydrated and play when you're already alert.
- HitMe

Concentrate as much as possible.
Play lots of video games.
- zerm1r

Any more good suggestions?

Play while the boss might catch you. Downside: severe risk of twitching and clicking too soon.

Try this test after playing a shooting game when you are full of real life adrenline.

turn down the colour of your screen to 0, and turn up the contrast and the gamma of your screen. apart from psychological training (to concentrate for example) the speed of your reaction just depends on the intensity of the sensation the eyes/the brain gets. And a change from dark to bright causes stronger impact to the nerve cells/perception.

That is, if the colour would change from red to brown, the difference you recognize is not so strong, your reaction time wouldnt be so fast.

That should give most people a noticable boost.

A reason is, I think, when you stare long time on a bright or colourful surface, your eyes get used to it, its about chemical reactions and neurological processes within the perceptive nerve cells.

Jump the gun a lot! Having false starts don't count against your time, and eventually you'll get lucky and get a few in around 100 ms that will count. Personally, I think they should count the false starts. Doesn't seem fair if you have dozens of them.

EAGERTESTICAL's idea definitely works lol. Fear the green monster!

Just like the other comments; stay hydrated, alert and awake. I use my peripheral vision and stare at the blue border around the box. I have developed an internal clock of when it will change colors on average, which helps with my times.

Imagine you are looking in a red landscape for a tiny green creature that is going to leap out and attack you... imagine the creature is hiding behind red leaves and when you spot it you only have a split-second to squish it under your finger or it will attack your genitals.. if you get in the right frame of mind you will find your finger knows what to do. Fear the green...

Don't look at the box necessarily, sit about 2-2.5 feet away from the screen and don't focus on anything but just keep looking and wait for somthing to change.

Ride a motorbike...that helps

whoadude 1 year 2 weeks ago

sometimes zooming in helps so the red is bigger
also glazing your eyes over is quite good and having your face really close while holding your breath then moving away as you click

hurleyboi8787 1 year 4 weeks ago

I find holding my breath helpful too. Exhale when you click.

i found a "glitch" in the system
many times, the green appears almost exactly five seconds after u click

so just count to five and click :)

Well you have to learn to think quick and you need to train your vision. Try play Flash Focus for the DS. Reaction time and reflexes etc. are all about timing and Focus. Exercies everyday. Playing video games like Fighter, shooter and Action Adventure games. Examples Guilty Gear Accent Core,Halo 3, Devil May Cry 3&4. It will help. Also if you need to seek knowledge about your reaction time and reflexes.

Play video games where u need reactions, like shooters. I play Gears of War and that's very good for it.

Project Zero 1 year 6 months ago

Simply stay close to your monitor and click at any change at all

STAY FIT, everyone thinks having the fastest hardware makes a big difference. Well it does but staying fit is more important. Reflects (involuntary moments) plays a big roll, thats why practicing makes a big difference.

if your looking to increase your time in a virtual shooter, don't play around with this. Go play the game instead !!

Use a lower screen resolution so that you can have a faster refresh rate. CRT monitor like already said. Definitely do this when you're not hungry/tired/thirsty so you can focus. I used to be competitive (top 10) on the top scores list before a bunch of fire breathers came.

Look through the screen, click quickly at the first sign of color change. Practice. Don't think being good at this game will help you in counter-strike or life...

reflextraining 1 year 7 months ago

Think about as soon as something changes u will click very fast - helps alot

adamh 1 year 7 months ago

Breathe in and slowly breathe out continuously as you count to four letting your eyes focus on the middle distance and let your finger click

Dologan 1 year 8 months ago

Your hardware can have a significant impact. Stick to wired mice, as wireless ones introduce about ~40ms lag. Laptop buttons are even worse. Some LCD screens are also known to have a measurable lag compared to CRT monitors.
My typical ~150ms RT over 100 clicks with a wired mouse and CRT/desktop LCD went to >190ms with a (RF)wireless mouse on my laptop. I blame the mouse more than the screen, but I'm not sure how much of the lag is due to each.
